Bytes to Kilobytes Converter
Convert bytes to kilobytes for file metadata, source code files, and system logs where precise small sizes matter. Bytes and kilobytes are the foundational storage units in computing.
Formula
Divide bytes by 1000 to get kilobytes (decimal). To reverse, multiply kilobytes by 1000 to get bytes.

About these units
Byte
The byte (8 bits) was established as the basic addressable unit of computer memory in the 1960s. Its name derives from "bite," respelled to avoid typographical confusion with "bit."
Kilobyte
The kilobyte (1000 bytes in decimal) originated when early computers had memory measured in thousands of bytes. The binary kibibyte (1024 bytes) emerged from the convenience of powers of 2 in binary computing.
Frequently asked questions
In SI decimal convention, 1 KB = 1000 bytes. In binary convention, 1 KiB (kibibyte) = 1024 bytes. Hard drive manufacturers use decimal; RAM and some OS utilities use binary.
A plain text document might be 1–100 KB; a simple email is typically 2–10 KB.
1000 bytes (decimal) or 1024 bytes (binary kibibyte).
