About these units

Celsius

The Celsius scale was proposed by Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius in 1742, originally with 0° at the boiling point of water and 100° at freezing — later reversed by Carl Linnaeus. It became the international standard temperature scale used in the SI system.

Fahrenheit

Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, a German physicist, introduced his scale in 1724, setting 0° at the freezing point of a brine solution and 96° at body temperature. The modern Fahrenheit scale places water's freezing point at 32°F and boiling at 212°F.

Frequently asked questions

37 × 1.8 + 32 = 98.6°F, which is normal human body temperature.

-40°. Both scales coincide at -40 degrees.

0°C = 32°F, the freezing point of water.

Double the Celsius temperature and add 30 for a quick estimate. For example, 20°C ≈ 40 + 30 = 70°F (actual: 68°F).
